About the author

1954 Born in Switzerland, in the valley of the cheese with the big holes, the Emmental, I left my home at the age of twenty to explore the world. With jobs in South Africa and Australia, I financed my extensive private travels and, with moderate success improved my travel budget with travel photo reports for various Swiss magazines. In the late 70s I was particularly fascinated by the most diverse cultures of Asia, the continent which I traveled extensively. In the 80s and 90s, I worked for the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs in 10 different assignments as a logistician, water and construction expert on three different continents, with a focus on Africa. In doing so, I witnessed tragedies like the genocide in Rwanda, earthquakes in the Philippines or the chaos of the 89s revolution in Romania.

Married to Zhane Armijos, native of Vilcabamba, we live since 2010 Vilcabamba, in the southern province of Loja, Ecuador, which I have known since the beginning of the new century.

As a self-taught photographer, I understood photography always more as a means of documentation, as a craft, and not as a separate art form. With the change from analogue to digital photography, I also discovered the versatile creative possibilities of the new technology and have been trying ever since to refine my photographic style and convey it more expressively.

Instead of leaving the photographic result to the random whims of the camera-algorithms, I take photos in raw mode and edit my photos primarily in the "Ligthroom" program from “Adobe” to convey my own subjective perspective with the images. I also edit black and white images with the "Snapseed" program to emphasize the finest details.

As a freelance photographer, I participate on the projects of Dr. José Carlos Arías, Director of the Historical Archives in Loja, Ecuador. For the latest German travel guide "Ecuador" by the author Volker Feser of Michael Müller Verlag, I contributed the cover photo and numerous other pictures.
